When we understand place value, we can easily see if one number is larger than another, or we can put a set of numbers in ascending (increasing) or descending (decreasing) order. To compare numbers, we use the <, > and = sign to show ‘less than’, ‘greater than’ and equals to.

Numbers we compare or order may not always be in figures (digits). Sometimes, they will be represented in different ways such as place value counters, bar models, using images to represent amounts or Diennes models (cubes of one, ten, hundreds and thousands). It is important to practise ordering using a variety of representations in order to really grasp this concept.
