Place value counters and arrow cards

The focus in mathematics teaching in lower key stage 2 (Years 3 &4) is to ensure children become increasingly more fluent with the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and are confident when dealing with larger whole numbers.

Both written and mental methods become more efficient as children use known number facts and a secure concept of place value to solve increasingly harder problems with whole numbers.

As children develop mathematical reasoning, they begin to explain the relationship between shapes and their properties, as well as reading and spelling mathematical vocabulary.

Ideally, children should be able to recall times table facts up to 12 x 12 as they face increasingly complex problems to solve.
